Terceira in the Azores is now the second most populated island after São Miguel and the third largest in the chain.
The interior of the island is wet and covered with heather. Nearly all settlement is on the coast including the magnificent Angra do Heroismo – now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Attractions in the UNESCO World Heritage listed old town include the Palácio dos Capitães Generais, the former Jesuit college that later became government buildings, the Jardim Duque da Terceira full of ferns and other native plants and the Casa do Capitão do Donatário, an historic residence.
Churches of interest include the Sé Catedral, Angra do Heroísmo (Cathedral of Angra do Heroísmo) which has its roots in a mid-15th century chapel founded by the explorer Álvaro Martins.
Angra do Heroísmo has the largest concentration of hotels on Terceira. Some places to choose from include the Hotel Cruzeiro with continental breakfast and free WiFi, and the 2-star Hotel Zenite close to the cathedral.
Elsewhere on the island try the Casa das Artes a luxury villa in the village of Serreta on the west coast or the Hospedaria casa D’Avo guesthouse on the east coast close to the airport.
