São Jorge in the Azores affords spectacular views of the other central islands. The 15 km wide Pico-São Jorge Channel separates it from its nearest neighbors Pico and Faial, the three islands forming what is known as the “Triangle”.

The island’s green pastures are ideal for diary cattle and São Jorge is rightly known for its delicious cheeses.

The long and thin island of São Jorge was first settled during the Age of Discovery on the initiative of Henry the Navigator.

The main town is Velas on the south coast close to the airport and the ferry port. It has a population of around 5,300 inhabitants out of a total population on São Jorge of 9,500 people.

Velas has the largest concentration of hotels on São Jorge. Some places to choose from include the Hospedaria Austrália a bed and breakfast with free WiFi, and the Cantinho do Piano a guesthouse with family rooms.
