Portugal Maps: Graciosa Azores Map
Graciosa in the Azores archipelago is a pleasant island of sloping hills and pretty villages.
The volcanic sulphurous lake at Caldeira do Enoxfre is a reminder of the island’s volcanic past.
Oval-shaped Graciosa is part of the central group of islands in the Azores. These include Faial, Pico, Terceira and São Jorge.
The island is volcanic in nature like the rest of the Azores. Caldeira da Graciosa is a caldera formed 12,000 years ago. It rises to 405 meters with a depth of 270 meters. Within this protected area is the Furna do Enxofre, a deep cave with the largest volcanic dome in Europe. The whole area is classified as a Wetland of International Importance under the Ramsar Convention and is part of the Azores UNESCO Global Geopark and is designated as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.
Places to stay range from a few high-end luxury hotels to mainly apartments, villas and budget guesthouses. Some traditional windmills have even been converted into holiday homes.
